With the recession having had its impact, organizations have started switching their focus from surviving to demonstrating business value, here metrics plays an important role in keeping as it helps keep management informed about project performance and its impact on customers in the long run.

Managing Vendors
The trend for outsourcing work will leap forward this year 2010 as organizations will be still looking at operating at a lean level without permanently increasing staff and resources that are not crucial to the daily business. If you learn the project management techniques in managing vendors you stand a chance to prove what an asset you can be as a project manager to your organisation. This is a growing sector.

Project Management Training:
To perform better as project managers you as an individual will need to take action so that your organisation takes an active role in providing training which is outside the four walls of your organisation. The trend this year is to learn the latest in project management methodologies outside the traditional classroom environment. This can be achieved when you know what you want rather than accept what has been told to you. Senior management are looking at ways to up skills their Project Managers and staff who plan on being project managers with ways to ensure success of projects that they work on.

No Longer “Theory based Project Management”
In 2009, many organizations implemented learning initiatives focused on project management but they were based on theory and best practices which may no longer apply since the internet is dynamically evolving. Hence a more agile approach will be taken starting from this year to make learning Project Management fun and enjoyable. This will enable a better workforce within organizations taking this approach.

Risk Management will be taken more seriously
With the recession showing its impact, organization will pay a closer watch at PM risk assessment where there will be emphasis on the task level as well as the overall project and program level.

Agile Project Management techniques Will Increase
With the increased use of Agile project management approaches, various implementations methods (e.g., Scrum), will demand a measurement technique to value which method is right for the organization. Whether Agile is a perfect method to implement for a project as compared to other methods. Knowing this from a practical approach will be the key area this year.

Business Analysis will be important
As a project manager you will have to know the ground up rules of requirements gathering and understanding the project to be in business. Business Analysis will be as important a skill as project management so if you have a combination of these techniques you know you will have greater value than normal project managers with years of experience as this year onwards organizations will be looking for PMs who are willing to get their hands dirty not just reporting on the status of projects.
